Christie Finn

Christie Finn (she/her) is active as both a performer and scholar in the world of classical and experimental vocal performance and public musicology. For over two decades, Finn has maintained a career as a singer and vocalist, first in her native United States and then throughout Europe, performing with important new music ensembles like Asko | Schönberg (NL), CrossingLines (ES), ekmeles (USA), ensemble chromoson (IT), ensemble plus (AT), ensemble recherche (DE), ensemble TaG (CH), ensemble variances (FR), Hezarfen Ensemble (TR), Experiments in Opera (USA), ictus (BE), S.E.M. Ensemble  and many others. International festivals include the Bregenzer Festspiele, the Beijing Modern Music Festival, klarafestival (BE), Hamburg International Music Festival, Gaudeamus (NL), Festival Mixtur (ES) and Resonant Bodies (USA), among others. 

She is a co-founder and member of the experimental music duo NOISE-BRIDGE, collaborating with clarinetist Felix Behringer, as well as co-artistic director of ExVoCo (Stuttgart, Germany). Finn is also the Managing Director of the Hampsong Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to teaching the history of culture through classical concert song. She has helped found numerous initiatives and organizations supporting the freelance music scene of Stuttgart, Germany, including the Stuttgarter Kollektiv für aktuelle Musik, e.V. as well as Salon34 and Studio34 at the Kunstraum34 (both aimed at providing support and platforms for emerging artists).

Her performance career has always benefited from her work as a scholar; she has presented papers relating to contemporary vocal music and gender and race studies at international conferences such as that of the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, and the Theatre and Performance Research Association (UK), as well as symposia in Switzerland, Italy and Germany. She has taught courses at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg (DE) as well as undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Michigan (USA) and Southern Methodist University (Dallas, USA). She is currently writing her dissertation in Historical Musicology (Dr. phil/PhD) at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg while maintaining her performing career. Finn is also a founding faculty member of the Singing Down the Barriers Institute at the University of Michigan, which has taken place every summer since 2021.

A native of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Finn lives in southwest Germany with her husband and two sons.
